Adriana (Adri) Escorcia and the Day of the Dead
11/19/05- Hello!!! :D How is it going?? I hope everithing is going great over there in Wisconsin!!. Thanksgiving is right at the corner11 So as Chritmas!!!! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!       •I hope you have a great time :D       •Here mexico is going really good :D Im going to college! :D.. I like it a lot.       •The day of the dead just past, so, here is send some pictures from the holidays..
Some are from the altars thet we build for our beloved  one that have gone :), It divided in 3 parts, one is for God, the second for the old poeple and the third one for the kids.
•The altars have usually the food that the person liked, or depends of the case; the candy that the kid liked.        •Also we set color paper, toys, mole, flowers ( Specially the cempazuchitl.. a orange flower that represents joy).. The whole idea of the tradition, is that the past away people is comming back to visit, so the family prepares a special meal adn things that they liked for them :).  This tradition comes from a mixture among the mexican cultures (such as the aztec, mixteca, maya, etc) and the spanish religion.       •The sugar skulls are very popular in this time,, :) they are just like pumkin pie in thanksgiving season!!, we put them in the altars and, as well, we have a recent tradition wihich is to exchange sugar or chocolate skulls whit your friends and family whit the names of them :D And also you can set those candies in the altar :)       •Here are some pictures of them :(Click for slide show)D       •HOOOoooo. Also,, Some friends and I were part of a 'leyend house',,,,,mmmmm, Its just like a 'Hunted house' But whit tipic leyends from the city, Tulancingo.       •We represent the scene as the guide is relating the story. It's really cool :D.. I got to be a nun and a woman who uses herbs to treat the people. ( Which wasnt a legal thing for the inquisition in those times).       •The performances were great, we had a lot of fun :D.. The house that performed at is very old,  about the 1700!!!! :O . The staff decorated it whit a huge ' Catrina'!!! :D       •We had a lot of fun. Here are some pictures from all of this :D       •I hope you enjoy it :)       •LOADS AND LOADS OF HUGS AND KISSES!! Love Adriana

Henning led the club in prayer.  The business meeting included the following: Guests       •David Horn, past district governor from an Oregon Rotary Club was a guest at the meeting.  Student guests included Adriana Escorcia, Carl Schlegel, and Alyssa VanLanen.  All three students took part in the 2006-07 Rotary Exchange Program. Other gusts included Julie Ruh and her daughter who served as a host family for Adriana.  Carol and Scott Everson were in attendance.  They served as Adriana’s first host family.        •Adriana informed the club that this will be her last meeting.  Most recently she was in Canada and Grand Rapid for a final exchange meeting.  She informed the club that it was very difficult to say good bye to all of the friends she made during the school year.  She informed the club that yesterday her exchange family threw her a going away party.   Adriana told the club that she really loves the United States and would like to come back to complete a school year at the University of Wisconsin in Madison .  She thanked the club for everything that it has done for her during the course of the last year.
David & Sarah Gallagher, Carol & Scott Eversen, Adriana, Paul & Julie Ruh (Adriana's host families)
Carl gave a very brief description of his experience.  He returned to the United States two weeks ago and found it hard to leave Australia .  He was with 6 host families during his stay and one of his most memorable experiences was his trip around the Eastern part of Australia       •Alyssa reported the she had just returned from the county of Denmark where she stayed with 3 host families.  One of her highlights was a Euro trip that took her to 8 different counties.  She thanked the Rotary Club for their support. Miscellaneous Reports       •Betty informed the club that the board has recommended donating $150 to the Raider Golf Outing.  All proceeds from the outing go to the Two Rivers Education Foundation.  The club is also looking for 3 golfers who would be interested in joining Dennis Swetlik to form a Rotary foursome for the event.        •Ned Jacquart reported that he is still working on the 501 (c)3 for the club.       •One person is still needed for Meals-on-Wheels for Wednesday July 25th.       •The last Lobster Fest meeting took place on Tuesday July 17th.  Tim Schroeder reported that Ron Stangel seems to have the hamburger and brat stand under control.  Tim also reported that the planning committee is thinking of having a practice Lobster Fest to practice cooking lobster.  Ned reported that he has copies of the Lobster Fest tickets and a sign-up sheet at the back table.  Betty challenged every member to sell at least 4 tickets.  Betty also reported that the Two Rivers Rotary Club was very well represented in the area of volunteerism, but was somewhat low in the area of ticket sales.        •Betty expressed concern about the attendance at board meetings.  She informed the club that all members should maintain a minimum of 50% attendance.  Those that are at a level less than 50% will receive an e-mail from the board and possibly a follow-up call.        •Betty informed the club that committees will be formed at our next meeting.        •The club steak fry is scheduled for Monday August 6th.  Betty was informed that Ron Stangel may be willing to organize the event.        •Ned Jacquart facilitated Bums and Brags.   He passed the basket to Tim Schroeder for the July 30th meeting.

by Dick Nitsch ,Photos by Tom Finley: Adri Escorcia, our inbound student for the 2006-07 school year, was the program presenter.  Adri began her presentation by informing the club that she wanted to tell about her life in Mexico because it is part of her, just as the
Escorcia
United States is now a part of her.  Adri held up a Mexican flag and explained the meaning of the colors.  The green field represents hope and pureness of soul, the red field symbolizes the blood of those who have died, and the emblem in the middle is an Aztec Eagle.  The country of Mexico consists of 31 states and 1 federal district – Mexico City .  Hildalgo is the state in which Adri lives.  Adri was born in Mexico City which has a population of 8,721,000.  She provided pictures of some of he favorite structures in Mexico City including the basilica where the Blessed Virgin Mary reportedly appeared, the Architecture Museum , and the Mexican capital buildings.  Adri lived in Tulancingo for 5 years and then moved to Acatlan where she currently lives.  Acatlan has a population of 18,000 so it is slightly larger than Two Rivers.  Acatlan is known for its cheese production and textiles.  Adri showed pictures of her family, friends and the process the family uses in making cheese.  She described school in Mexico as being different than it is in Two Rivers.  In Mexico , students were uniforms, do not have consistent school hours, and do not change classrooms.  Adri attended a private school where the teachers change rooms rather than the students.  She indicated that she likes that approach because she gets to know all of the students in her class very well.  Adri informed the club that all Mexican food is not spicy.  Much of the food she eats is a mix of Spanish and Mexican foods; which is a reflection of combined cultures.  The most common forms of transportation in her home town are: the subway, bus, taxi, and walking.   See Adri's slide show.
