Rotary Youth Exchange

The twofold purpose of the student exchange program is:

1) to promote international goodwill and understanding at the person to person level
2) to provide the opportunity for study and international living abroad for a period of eleven to twelve months.

The primary emphasis is on a cultural exchange rather than an educational exchange.

The exchanges include outbound and inbound for approximately eleven months and also summer exchanges for approximately one month. The TR Rotary club has a long tradition of supporting exchange students which started in 1976 and is one of our club’s major service projects.

From one to three students have gone outbound each year. Students living in TR and attending Washington High School, Roncalli, and Manitowoc Lutheran are eligible. It is usually best if the TR student is outbound during their junior year because when they return for their senior year, they can share the experiences they had with other TR students and give presentations to the Rotary Club & other local organizations. Children of Rotarians amd non-Rotarians are eligible as outbounds. Since 1976, our students have gone to New Zealand, India, Japan, Zimbabwe, Australia, Denmark, Sweden, England, The Netherlands, Chile, Bolivia, Brazil, and other countries. Our club pays the administrative costs(Aprrox. $1,000 per student) , students & parents are responsible for airfare and other normal expenses during the year. Students are required to attend school & bring back a transcript. Grades earned during the exchange will not affect their grade point average at Washington High School.

The District Youth exchange committee determines if students are selected and determines the country assignment.

The TR Rotary club usually hosts one inbound student each year. The student ideally stays with 3 different host families for three and a half months each. Club members are strongly encouraged to invite inbound students to participate in their family activities such as a meal, trips, athletic, music, and play events, vacations, etc. The inbound students have a lot to share but that only happens when club members invite them to do things.

The Summer Exchange Program is for 15-18 year olds to experience another culture and to promote international understanding. It is a eight week program with a TR student spending four weeks overseas and then a child from the foreign host family coming to TR to stay with the family of the child who went overseas. Students pay a flat fee (approx. $1500) no matter where they are assigned.

The administrative activities of arranging for and coordinating all the details of Rotary exchange students are made by the Central States Youth Exchange located in Grand Rapids, Mi.

Interact Club- (Learn More)

As part of our involvement with youth programs, we sponsor the Interact Club at Washington High School. The club provides an opportunity for high school students to get in the habit of service to others while in high school and to learn leadership and responsible citizenship that promotes international understanding and peace. Club projects are sponsoring a child in the Philippines by contributing $340 annually to the Christian Children’s Fund, scholarships for local Seniors, co-sponsoring a blood drive and assisting the Rotary club with projects. For more information contact Dick Nitsch

Scholorships

Annually, the club is active in providing scholarships to two students planning to attend Lakeshore Technical College and has sponsored youth to attend Business World, Badger Boys State and the World Affairs Seminar.
